Wine production has come a long way in Portugal in the last 20 years, with the introduction of modern production methods, the ideal climate and varying soil compositions, enologists from north to south have created some truly divine combinations worthy of much international acclaim and prized many times at wine fairs around the globe.
Sadly, the volumes produced are rarely sufficient to warrant mass exportation, as especially the selction, vintage and special reserve wines have very limited bottling runs. With the exception of a few larger wineries making their products available abroad, you will probably not find many of these wines outside of Portugal. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as many people will attest, these wines simply taste better when drunk at a late lunch on a mild sunday afternoon in the shade of an olive tree ovelooking the Atlantic Ocean.
So now that all you wine lovers have another excuse to come to Portugal, allow me to make some suggestions...
A complext red wine with 13,5% Alc. vol.
well suited to accompany cheese, game and red meat.
A special Syrah produced by Cortes de Cima with 14% Alc. vol. These are limited edition and only produced in vintage years, so if you find bottles stocked, don't pass up the opportunity.
Produced by Secret Spot Wines in the Douro Valley from vines with over 25 varieties and some over 50 years old, 14% Alc. Vol. A complex and deep aroma with a very long finish, well suited for red meats and game.
